When did you become a member of the GGL?
I have been a member of the GGL from 2009 to 2012.
Where do you work and what is your position?
I have currently the position of the general manager of the West German Study Group (WSG).
What was your field of research during your doctoral studies? Are you still working on that?
I was working in the field of basic cardiology and vascular permeability at section 3 (Heart, Lung and Blood Vessels). But I have completely changed my field, so I’m working now in the field of breast cancer which has nothing to do with the field of research in section 3.
Do you miss something from the good old days in Gießen in the GGL?
I do miss Gießen a lot because I lived here for 14 years and I like the city and of course the university infrastructure and that there are a lot of students here.
What part of the GGL was most helpful to achieve your current position?
It was very helpful for me to attend courses of the doctoral development programme (part A). All the things that had to do with soft skills, presentation skills, business English, how to get a job education, all things who had to be considered. Mostly the topics that were not directly related to lab work and research were very helpful for me. Especially in my position I hold now, these soft skills are more and more important in my daily business life.
What piece of advice would you like to give to our new members?
Take the chance to attend especially the non-scientific seminars of the GGL because the skills you can learn there will be really helpful in your further career. It will cost you a lot of money if you do it later on in your private life. Attend those courses – it will help a lot. Especially if you plan to go to industry instead of academic research.
