B1: The role of COPD in the growth and metastasis of lung cancer (Prof. Weißmann, Dr. Böğürü-Seidel)
In subproject B1, the hypothesis that COPD caused by tobacco smoke exposure results in an altered micromillieu in the lungs that favours the growth and metastasis of lung carcinomas is being investigated in the mouse model. In particular, the question of whether an inhibition of prolyl hydroxylases caused by oxidative and nitrosative stress and the resulting activation of HIF (hypoxia inducible factor) is the cause of this will be investigated.
