About the project
Welcome to the MARRES Project MARRES stands for "One health surveillance approach on MARine mammal, marine environmental and human antimicrobial RESistance on the North and Baltic Seas" The MARRES project is part of the JPIAMR - "Joint Programming Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance" initiative DISTOMOS, which aims to develop innovative strategies, tools, technologies, and methods for the diagnosis and surveillance of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) using a One Health approach. The aim is to coordinate AMR research on a global level. Focusing on the marine ecosystem, this project investigates the emergence, maintenance, dissemination, and transmission of AMR bacteria and antimicrobial resistance genes. By analyzing seawater and studying apex predators such as harbour and grey seals, we aim to identify AMR trends and mechanisms in the North and Baltic Seas. These findings will be compared with AMR data from human and domestic animals. The MARRES project is enjoying an exciting collaboration with AMR experts and marine biologists from Germany, Poland and Lithuania and is endeavouring to provide new insights into the occurrence and interaction of AMR across different sectors within a single ecosystem. |
