Agressive Neophyten wie die kaukasiche Herkules-Staude (Heracleum mantegazzianum) stellen in Europa und weltweit ein zunehmendes Problem für die Erhaltung der Biodiversität dar. Ursachen und Mechanismen der Ausbreitung, die Auswirkungen auf die einheimische Vegetation und Möglichkeiten der Kontrolle invasiver Arten sind jedoch meist noch lückenhaft oder überhaupt nicht bekannt. In dem von der EU geförderten Projekt 'Giant Alien' werden Forschungsarbeiten auf den Gebieten der Taxonomie und Genetik, Populationsbiologie und Ökologie sowie Biocontrol (Herbivore, Phytopathogene) an Heracleum mantegazzianum durchgeführt. Ziel ist es, eine auf dem Wissen der unterschiedlichen Disziplinen basierende integrierte Management-Strategie für den Neophyten Heracleum mantegazzianum in Europa zu entwickeln.
Die Professur für Landschaftsökologie und Landschaftsplanung der Justus-Liebig-Universität untersucht im Rahmen des Giant Alien-Projektes den Einfluß verschiedener Standortbedingungen auf die Phänologie und Populationsdynamik von Heracleum mantegazzianum in Europa und im Kauksus. Für ausgewählte Populationen werden Lebenstafeln erstellt, die als Datengrundlage für Populationsmodelle dienen. Des weiteren werden unter vegetationsökologischen Gesichtspunkten die Auswirkungen von Heracleum mantegazzianum auf die einheimische Vegetation untersucht und eine landschaftsökologische Analyse der Ausbreitungsursachen durchgeführt.
