How to find us

Arriving by plane

The nearest international airport is Frankfurt Airport, about 60 km south to Giessen. From there you can either use the well developed and convenient railway system or, if you prefer, rent a car.

by train
Inside the terminal, please follow the signs down to the train station below the airport (the train station is below Terminal 1; if you arrive at Terminal 2 you have to go to Terminal 1 via SkyLine, which is free of charge). You can either buy the train ticket to Giessen at the desk you pass on your way down to the platforms or directly at the machines at the platform (the RMV - the local public transport company - code for Giessen is 1501). You have to take a train (normally S-Bahn) to Frankfurt Central Station (roughly every 10 to 15 minutes). At Frankfurt Central Station you will arrive at one of the underground platforms. To change trains, you have to go upstairs to the main platforms. There, the best is to take the so-called Regional Express (RE) to Giessen (operating with about half hour tact), the travelling time is about fourty minutes. Continue at Arriving by train.

by car
Inside the terminal, there are offices of all international as well as some local car rental companies. After getting the car, follow the signs to the direction Kassel or Hannover, this will bring you to the A5 (Autobahn - highway - number 5) going north. Continue at Arriving by car.

Arriving by trainThe easiest possibility to reach Giessen by train is to use the so-called Regional Express (RE). For details, please check the time table of the Deutsche Bahn AG . After arriving at Giessen Central Station you can either take a taxi or a bus, or - if you are sportive - perform a 20 minutes walk (you may want to have a look on a city map).

by taxi
A taxi you will find just in front of the train station waiting for you. Tell the driver the address Heinrich-Buff-Ring 16.

by bus, first possibility
If you prefer bus, the first possibility is to follow the signs to the Stadtbuslinien (city busses). There you can take number 2, 4, or 5, all of them will bring you to the Marktplatz (market place, central bus station). There you have to change busses to number 3 to Schwarzacker or 13 to Dyalisezentrum (don't get confused with the same buses to the opposite direction, which is Friedhof). You have to leave the bus at the stop Schlangenzahl. Now, follow the street a few meters in the direction of the bus. At this crossing, you are already able to see the physics building, it's the big grey building in front of you at your right hand (the big grey building in front of you at your left hand is the chemistry building, in the middle you see building of biology). At this crossing, turn left, after a few meters, take the small street at the right. Now you are at the Heinrich-Buff-Ring. Follow the ring to right until you reach to physics building (be careful, the university is constructing a new building in the middle of the ring). From this direction take the last door (it looks like a door for delivering). Take the elevator to the third or fourth floor.

by bus, second (faster) possibility (but unfortunetly only during working days and only during the time lectures are given at the university)
The second possibility for going by bus from the train station to the physics building is to take the number 10. To reach the bus stop, you have to cross the railways with the pedestrian bridge at the right side when leaving the station. Follow the Friedrichstraße a few meters until you reach the next crossing (Frankfurter Straße). The bus stop is right at the crossing (don't cross the Frankfurter Straße), its name is also Friedrichstraße. The number 10 is going every 30 minutes, but only on working days). Leave the bus at the stop Naturwissenschaften. The big grey building you see now is the physics building. Cross the parking area, go upstairs and enter the building at the first door at your left. Take the elevator to the third or fourth floor.

by walking (20 minutes)
If you prefer walking, use the pedestrian bridge to cross the railways, follow the Friedrichstraße, cross the Frankfurter Straße and continue strait ahead. After 250 meters you will reach a crossing, cross the Röntgenstraße and continue following the Friedrichstraße. After another 250 meters you will reach the Leihgesterner Weg. Go to right now. After 100 meters you cross the Aulweg, continue strait ahead. Another 200 meters and you will reach to parking area of the Naturwissenschaften (Physik/Chemie). The physics building is at the end of the parking area at your right hand. Go upstairs, enter the bulding with the first door at your left. Take the elevator to the third or fourth floor.

Arriving by carMap When arriving by car, you will be either on the A5 going north or south, on the A45 going north or south-east, on the B49 going east or the B3/A485 going south. All of them will lead you to the Giessener Ring (a highway ring around Giessen), but at different positions (you may want to have a look on an schematic overview map or a more detailed overview map). Follow the Giessener Ring until you reach the exit Uni-Klinikum, it is south to Giessen (you may want to have a look on a city map; don't get confused with other exits e.g. Licher Straße or Schiffenberger Weg claiming to lead you to the university, they will lead you to some part of the university, but not to the physics). After leaving the Giessener Ring, at the first crossing, turn right into the Robert-Sommer-Straße. Follow this street until it ends, then turn again right into the Schubertstraße and a few meters later left into the Aulweg. Follow this street until it crosses the Leihgesterner Weg (second crossing), there turn right. Follow this street until you see the sign indicating the parking area for Naturwissenschaften (Physik/Chemie) at the right side. Enter the parking area and turn left to the part belonging to the physics department. Follow the parking area until it ends. The big grey building now close to you is the physics building. Go upstairs and enter the building at the first door at you left. Take the elevator to the third or fourth floor.
