Duties/Responsibilities (a selection): Director Science and Innovation: 

  • responsible for the effective and efficient implementation of the strategic plans 2020-2023 and 2024-2027 related to the WMO Long-Term Goal 3 “Advance Targeted Research”, advance scientific knowledge of the earth system; enhance the science-for-service value chain ensuring scientific and technological advances; improve predictive capabilities and advance policy-relevant science;
  • lead the Science and Innovation Dept. with responsibility for the World Climate Research Programm (WCRP), the World Weather Research Programm (WWRP) and the Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW);
  • responsible for human resources management, administration, logistics, financial and budget management;
  • responsible for the provision of support to the Research Board and the WMO Scientific Advisory Panel;
  • mobilize the research community and contribute to the Earth System approach including international coordination, communication, outreach, capacity development/training;
  • build strategic research partnerships through close collaboration with key stakeholders, partners, academia, research institutions and UN organizations;
  • leverage and mobilize extrabudgetary resources in particular from competitive research calls;
  • secure competitive funding supporting the research programm (achieved through successful acquisition of third-party funds from the European Union as PI and Coordinator, >1,5 Mio Euro)
  • development/training; responsible and in charge of the annual publication of the United in Science report and drafting policy briefs for SBSTA and UNFCCC COP (mainly on topics related to early warnings, global greenhouse gases, adaptation, mitigation, weather and climate extremes and attribution);
