On June 13-14, 2024, Justus Liebig University Giessen hosted the international conference “Language Ideologies in the Successor States of the USSR – Soviet Legacies and New Developments” - funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG).

The conference brought together a diverse group of scholars from Ukraine, Great Britain, Canada, the USA, Poland, Bulgaria, Germany, Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Austria, and Italy. Over two days, participants engaged in seven panels featuring 28 presentations that explored the intersection of linguistics, political science, sociology, international relations, history, and culture.

Scholars explored diverse topics, including Soviet and post-colonial language ideologies, linguistic identity construction, language policies during the Russo-Ukrainian War, and the impact of language ideologies in migrant communities. The discussions also delved into the historical and contemporary language attitudes in the Baltic States, Georgia, and Russian Federation regions, emphasising the dynamic interplay between language, identity, and power in the former USSR states. Special attention was given to Ukraine and the ongoing decolonisation processes, sparking significant dialogue and insights.

The event fostered a rich exchange of ideas and showcased innovative research, making it a significant milestone in understanding the linguistic and ideological landscapes of the successor states of the USSR.

The organisers extend their gratitude to all participants and contributors for their invaluable input and engagement.
