VLADIMIR MILLER AND MIRIAM DREYSSE
TALK ABOUT
"SETTLEMENTS", ARTISTIC PRACTICE, AND COLLABORATION

SETTLEMENTS is the name of a series of open workspaces that Vladimir Miller has been developing over the course of several years, as of late within the framework of his teaching position at a.pass in Brussels, where he recently organised the eleventh edition of the series. Currently, the performance maker, scenographer and video artist is preparing SETTLEMENT 12 which will start in Giessen on January 8 and take place at the ATW. In his function as a guest professor of the ATW, he will work with our students to facilitate a three weeks working period based on key principles such as “encountering processes”, “no spectators”, “gifts”, and “productive instability”.

Reason enough to invite Vladimir for a talk about the project, but also about his more general interest in collaboration. In the past, Vladimir has been working with artists such as Meg Stuart and Philipp Gehmacher, and a residency at Akademie Schloss Solitude in 2015 led him to investigating how “our politics and ideologies of togetherness and collaboration manifest themselves in our spaces of (artistic) practice.” This and other elementary questions of artistic practice will be addressed in a talk hosted by ATW professor Miriam Dreysse.

Taking place in a monthly interval since the end of 2015, the ATW TALKS are an open format for discussion organised by the ATW, the Institut für Angewandte Theaterwissenschaft, Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen, Germany. The aim of the ATW TALKS is to create a forum for debating contemporary dance, theatre and performance, thereby contributing to the academic and artistic discourse in the city, in the Hessian performing arts scene and beyond. What is often considered an advantage of the ATW is equally true for the talks: hidden away from a general public with its necessity for self-representation, the context in Gießen offers a unique possibility for an intense, extensive and critical exchange. Each edition of the ATW TALKS is moderated by members of staff working at the institute. Invitations are extended to artists and academics from the performing arts and affiliated disciplines. The talks are generally conducted in English, on certain occasions though, they might be held in German or French.
