Future Guides for Cities
public talk by seminar guest Michelle Teran
The ever increasing proliferation of online information generated through digital mapping and social media platforms are creating new ways of seeing and exploring the world. In Future Guides for Cities, I explore the relation between the domain of online space and the domain of the city. Using a special subset of online video provided with specific geographic coordinates as source material, I build multi-threaded narratives that link together person, online video and the places they inhabit in the city. These narratives form a series of micro-histories on different individuals, of which my role as observer and storyteller is made explicit. Together these collections form a social map of the city, creating a container of stories within the streets and city neighborhoods. These works fall into hybrid genres–locative media, documentary, participatory and performance art–that depict life in the networked city.
In her talk Michelle Teran will introduce some methodologies and artistic projects that critically engages media, connectivity and perception in the city.
