Securitization of the Serbian Orthodox Minority in the Habsburg Monarchy 1690-1740

The study about Serbian Orthodox Minority is a part of the Subproject B03 - Confessional Minorities as a Security Problem in the Early Modern Era. The research examines forms and methods of the securitization of the Serbian Orthodox Minority from the Great Migration of Serbs until the time of Maria Theresa. Under the pressure of Ottoman counteroffensive during the Great Vienna War, leaders of Serbian Orthodox Church along with a large number of refugees fled under the protection of the Habsburg Monarchy. Settled down mostly along the Military Border, from the very beginning Serbs will start a long fight from affirmation and institutional organization of Serbian Church in the predominantly Catholic state. The securitization frame of the Greek-Catholic Union, supported by Catholic clergy and some state officials, will soon after the Migration prove to be insufficient and fragile model of establishing security in the Military Frontier. Royal protection in the form of privileges issued from 1690 until 1695 will secure, at least on paper, position and existence of the Orthodox Church in the Empire. However, the pressure of the Greek-Catholic Union will never fade and Serbian clergy will face different challenges in their fight for religious freedom and institutional organization. Different approaches to resolving security problem based on religious segregation will reflect proportionally in the economy, military organization, cultural life etc. The biggest challenge in our research is the implementation of modern security theories in the historical timeframe of the 17th and 18th centuries, along with identification and analysis of numerous historical documents written on several languages and different scripts. In the recent security studies, the securitization process has been merely observed as a product of secular operations. However, this study will prove that religion was active and, in this case, the decisive factor in the securitization process.
