Late Arrival

I will arrive late. Is there a specific deadline that counts as late arrival?

“Late arrival” refers to arriving after the official start date of the semester, which may result in missing orientation and course activities. The orientation week begins on October 7, 2024, and the official start date of the program is October 14, 2024.

What consequences will my late arrival have?

If you arrive late, you will miss key orientation events designed to help you settle into the program, meet your peers, and understand the academic requirements. Additionally, you may fall behind on important course content covered at the start of the semester. Therefore, we strongly recommend arriving on time to ensure a smooth transition into your studies. However, there are no formal bureaucratic penalties for arriving late, as you are ultimately responsible for organizing and managing your own academic schedule.

Should I inform someone at the university about my late arrival?

No, you do not have to inform us about your late arrival.

Accommodation

Where can I look for accomodation?

As a student in Giessen, you can choose between private accommodation or life in a student hall of residence. JLU's residence services offer you active support in finding a place to stay.

Even though I am looking for accomodation, I can't find any. Who can help me?

Our Studierendenwerk is happy to provide information and tips to make your accommodation search easier.

Getting Started & Choosing Courses

When and how do I obtain my Student ID card?

It will be sent to you by mail, once you have entered a German residence adress.

Where do I find this semesters time table?

At JLU, you are responsible for the organization of your studies. There are no fixed timetables. You can choose your modules yourself. In doing so, you are responsible for ensuring that you meet all the necessary requirements of the degree program.

Is attendance mandatory?

Attendance is not usually mandatory in our programs, but some modules deviate from this rule. In general, we strongly recommend that you attend all modules in person so that you do not miss any of the course content.

How Do I choose and register for courses?

At JLU we use the “Stud.IP” tool to plan, organize and register for courses. You log in there with your JLU ID and the corresponding password. You can find all EGR courses in the handbook, and choose some of them for your first semester and then register for them. You can find out more about this at orientation.

When can I start choosing my courses for this winter semester?

We recommend that you start after the orientation events. During orientation, you will learn all the relevant information and systems for course selection.

Will there be digital courses?

Yes, some of the EGR-courses will be digitally available. Please check for those in Stud.IP.
