The Willem C. Vis Moot (english)

In general a moot is a juristic competition in which teams from different universities compete in a simulated court proceeding. The teams have the task to represent their clients in this fictional trial by writing pleadings and compete in different oral hearings against the other universities as their opponent.

The Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot was held in 1994 for the first time. This moot is the most distinguished civil law moot in the world. In 2018/19, 376 Universities from 87 states took part in the moot. Since the beginning the moot ist hosted by the Pace University New York and the United Nations.

The task of the participants is to deal with a case based on an international sales transaction subjected to the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods, 1980 (also referred to as the CISG) and procedural issues of arbitration.

The whole competition is held in English. Numerous of well-known arbitrators from all over the world act as judges in the orals hearings.
