In the following we want to show you how the Willem C. Vis Moot Experience of the JLU team could look like. Those are some of the experiences the Team for the 30th Vis Moot was able to make (in anti-chronological order). You are also welcome to follow the activities of this year's Moot Team (2023/24) on Instagram.
VIENNA the grand finale of the Vis Moot Season
After more than 7 months of preparation we finally arrived in Vienna for the grand finale of the Vis Moot where all the participating teams from all over the world come together. More than 2500 students from more than 350 Universities who were studying the case and preparing their arguments in the best possible way.
We sat up late into the night working on our pleadings, making final adjustments. We were happy to meet again all the people we got to know earlier in the year at different Pre-Moots and pleadings.
Even if we did not make it further than the general rounds, we had a great time during our one-week-stay in Vienna!
White & Case Pre-Moot Frankfurt a.M.
We attended the White & Case Pre-Moot in Frankfurt on 16th March 2023.
A whole day filled with pleadings. We had four pleadings with a lunch break in between. The Pre-Moot was very international, many teams from all around the world were part of it and White & Case also invited lawyers from other offices in Europe and South America who built the tribunals for the hearings. We received valueable feedback and learned a lot about how to improve our performance.
In between the pleadings, we had the possibility to chill on the rooftop terrace with delicious food and drinks!
Thanks for having us!
Marburg Mini Moot
Landed on 13th March 2023 in Frankfurt after being in NYC, pleading in Marburg the day after.
Thanks for inviting us to be part of the Marburg Mini Moot hosted by Marburg University at historic town hall.
Pleading at Fordham University NYC
The day after our Pre-Moot at the NYC Bar Association we were invited by the Fordham University for a friendly pleading.
Right around the corner at the prominent Columbus Circle one can find the Fordham University, which is a huge complex of different buildung which transmit a impressive atmosphere.
We were pleading two rounds against different team members of Fordham University. Many thanks to Rebecca, one of their coaches, who organized this hearings on a saturday, and especially to the arbitrators who shared their time and experience with us.
It was a whole different pleading that we were used to, because the practioners were mainly interested in getting together, discussing things, finding a solution. That unusal approach was very helpful to get a deep, practical view into the case.
New York City Bar Association Pre-Moot
(our team members Paul Nicolai and Aron Hermann, coaches Marius Gehler and Natalie Suchocki, and the Team of NY Law School)
Our highlight of this year's moot season was visiting the city that never sleeps - NEW YORK CITY.
After a 8-hours flight we finally arrived at JFK, waited almost 3 hours at the TSA to enter the US and then finally saw the city. We were quite impressed by all the skyscrapers, the tons of people, and the delicious food at every corner.
We started our first evening at Shake Shack with the best burger in Town, and started the day after immediatly with the Pre-Moot we came for hosted by the NYC Bar Association. We were invited to a historic, very impressive building and had to opportunity to plead against different teams from New York. As case law lawyers-to-be, the teams had different manner of argumentation which gave us interesting insights. We were happy to get to know the Team of New York Law School (see photo on the left), having good conversations, delicious snacks and a lot of tasty wine.
It was such a great experince, we are absolutely grateful for!
Pleading at PLA Piper Frankfurt a.M.
On 7th March 2023 we got the opportunity to be part of the Pleading hosted by DLA Piper in Frankfurt/Main. We received many valueable feedback by experts that already helped us improving our pleading. We were pleading two rounds against other German teams and ended the exciting, yet exhausting day with some drinks and snacks with a stunning view over the skyline of Frankfurt.
We are happy we could call DLA Piper one of our official supporters! Many thanks again for hosting and organizing that event!
Fox Williams Pre-Moot London
Our team spent four wonderful days in London to participate in the Fox Williams Pre-Moot on 25th-26th Feb. 2023. Our days were quite busy with pleadings (up to 4 pleadings a day), but in our time off we nevertheless had to possibility for a bit of sightseeing. We visited Buckingham Palace, the Tower Bridge, and ended our days together with the other participating teams in different pubs. The pleadings were very international, many different teams from all over the world, and also international arbitrators, that gave us a whole different view.
We are grateful for that experience!
Pleading at Gleiss Lutz Frankfurt a.M.
On 21st February 2023 we were invited by Gleiss Lutz Frankfurt for a pleading. We spent a great day in Frankfurt and gained many pleading experience.
We want to thank Gleiss Lutz, especially Dr. Gordon Kardos for the organization as well as the Arbitrators who formed the Tribunal for sharing their expertise with us. It was a valueable experience to receive feedback from a practioner's perspective.
White & Case Vis Colloquium 2022
On 20thOctober 2022 the team joined the Vis Colloquium hosted by White & Case at the Office in Frankfurt. The event was held simultaneously in several offices of White & Case in Europe which were connected via videoconference.
After several lectures by known speakers concerning the PCA rules, the CISG and written advocacy skills, we had some drinks and snacks on the rooftop above the beautiful skyline of Frankfurt City. The team had stimulating conversations and got the chance to get to know other teams.
Overall, it was a great, well-organized event, which gave us interesting inputs.
Thanks to White & Case for the invitation and for hosting this event.
18th Frankfurt Drafting School 2022
The team participated in the 18th annual Frankfurt Drafting School hosted by the Frankfurt Moot Alumni Association. During this 3-day-event we gained much information about international arbitration in general and the CISG specifically, as well as the ability to write proper memoranda. Highly skilled lecturers who participated in the Moot themselves several years ago, gave us interestings insides and shared helpful tips with us based on their own experiences. Accompanied by evening events with drinks and pizza, we had a great time in Frankfurt with the other teams and are now looking forward to 7th October, when the first written pleading stage will start.
