Background

Anthocyanins or their metabolites might exert positive health effects resulting from their anti-oxidative, anti-carcinogenic and anti-inflammatory properties. Children are a promising age group for health promotion. Therefore, it is of interest to assess their anthocyanin intake und to research on anthocyanin rich products for children.

Aims

Existing data and structures of the Dortmund Nutritional and Anthropometric Longitudinally Designed (DONALD) Study can be used and extended to analyse long-term intake of anthocyanins, associations between diet and gut microbiota, as well as sensory acceptation of anthocyanin rich products, developed within this project, in children.

The results will be used to further develop the preventive dietary concepts of the FKE (“Food based dietary guidelines for the first year of life”, “Optimised mixed-diet”), which belong to the standard dietary recommendations for children in Germany. Furthermore the results provide a basis for  the development of “optimised” products relevant to a preventive nutrition in children and beyond that.
