Topic

A “needs assessment” is a powerful yet overlooked pedagogical tool that plays a crucial role in identifying learning profiles and specific needs of students. By conducting a needs assessment, tutors and lecturers gain valuable insights into students' strengths, weaknesses, and learning preferences. This process not only helps pinpoint individual and group needs but also informs the design of a customized syllabus that is responsive to cultural aspects and learners’ needs. In this session, participants will get insight into the fundamentals on how to effectively implement needs assessments in teaching and tutoring contexts that enable them to design a tutoring learning course that is both student-centered and adaptable to the diverse requirements of learners.

Learning Goals

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Define the concept of “needs assessment” and its importance in student-centered learning.
  • Conduct a structured needs assessment by using the three-phase model: preassessment, asssessment, and post-assessment.
  • Identify steps to carry out a needs assessment and use the data gathered to design a tailored syllabus for an international tutoring course.
  • Address possible challenges and difficulties when implementing needs assessment.
