Objectives

By the end of this two-day workshop, participants will be able to: 

  • structure an academic article based on readers’ expectations, including developing an outline, maintaining a clear purpose, and connecting each element to a central claim,
  • utilize AI-based applications to streamline the drafting & revising process while respecting ethical, scientific, and legal constraints,
  • assess and improve the lexical clarity and comprehensibility of their texts,
  • identify reader expectations in different disciplines for journal articles. 

Content and methods

Content:

  • Models & structures for identifying and applying discipline-specific text structures
  • Strategies & templates for composing convincing academic prose
  • Strategies for the conscientious use of AI applications in academic writing
  • Strategies for avoiding common pitfalls in writing in English as a foreign language

Method:

  • Article analysis: Identifying common features within and across disciplines
  • Lexical & structural analysis: Differentiating between positive & problematic standards
  • Individual drafting: Ample time to draft & revise
  • Peer & instructor feedback: Preparing for the review-revise-resubmit process
