New publication | Special Issue: Materials Compounds from Composite Materials for Applications in Extreme Conditions |
We are pleased to announce the publication of a special issue with 14 manuscripts that have been produced within the DFG funded research training group (RTG) 2561 MatCom-ComMat. This RTG combines the expertise of the Dechema Research Institute Frankfurt, the Technical University of Darmstadt and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. |

This year's anniversary conference to mark the 50th anniversary of the Gesellschaft für Thermische Analyse e.V. (GEFTA) took place in Giessen. The theme of the conference was “Sustainability and materials science”. Dr. Alexander Sedykh presented his research work in a lecture. We are particularly pleased that Prof. Maren Lepple was awarded the NETZSCH-GEFTA prize! |

In September, we took part in the International Materials Science and Engineering Congress - MSE 2024 in Darmstadt. We had the pleasure of presenting our research in five talks. We used the time to exchange ideas with other researchers and develop new ideas. |

As part of the CLOCKS project (CLOsing the loop: building Circular sKillS on the entire value chain), a summer school on the topic of “Circularity and sustainability by design” was held in Giessen this year. Problems and possible solutions for a more sustainable future were presented in various lectures. |
New paper published | Reaction of a Molten Cr-Si-Base Alloy with Ceramics and a High Entropy Oxide |
We are pleased to announce the publication of a new article written in collaboration with the University of Bayreuth. Manuel Schenker produced a high-entropy oxide whose compatibility with a molten Cr-Si-based alloy was investigated in Bayreuth. |

In July, Giulia Bianchi and Benjamin Zimmermann took part in the FEMS Junior EUROMAT 2024 in Manchester and each presented their research work in a lecture. Giulia's talk on high-entropy oxides was entitled "New High-Entropy Oxides as Potential Thermal Barrier Coatings: Study on Different Compositions and Synthetic Approaches". Benjamin gave a talk on his battery research entitled "New Multicomponent Li-Garnets as Solid Electrolyte Material for Li-Ion Batteries". |

We are delighted that Prof. Lepple, together with other professors, will be presenting the new Master's degree course at an information event. In June, Jonas Pflug took part in the High Temperature Corrosion and Protection of Materials (HTCPM) symposium in France, where he presented his research findings on the corrosion of thermal barrier coatings in the form of a poster entitled "Investigation of Multicomponent Equimolar Rare-Earth Zirconates". He also took the opportunity to exchange ideas with other researchers about their research work on corrosion. |

During the 51st International Conference on Computer Coupling of Phase Diagrams and Thermochemistry (CALPHAD) in Mannheim, Prof. Maren Lepple and Alina Habermann were able to gain insights into the current development steps of various phase diagrams and their calculations. Alina Habermann also presented her research in a poster presentation for the international participants. |
New paper published | Oxidation Resistance and Microstructural Analysis of Polymer-Derived (HfxTa1−x)C/SiC Ceramic Nanocomposites |
A further paper by Nils-Christian Petry has been published, congratulations. The results are investigated in cooperation with TU Darmstadt, Fraunhofer IWKS, and KIT. It is published in Advanced Engineering Materials. |

At this year's spring symposium in Ulm, Manuel Schenker presented his research in a poster presentation and took the opportunity to exchange ideas with other young chemists from around the world. |
BMBF NanoMatFutur Networking Event, Berlin | 14.02.-15.02.2024 |
In recent years, it has not been possible to organise a network meeting for the group leaders of the BMBF NanoMatFutur and BattFutur junior research groups due to the coronavirus pandemic. This year the time had finally come and we were able to present our projects to each other, exchange ideas and network and get to know the PtJ and VDI staff in person. The event took place at the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) not far from the Chancellery in Berlin. |

New research project in the Cluster of Excellence POLiS |

The LeppleLab is represented in the Cluster of Excellence POLiS with a new research project. The aim of the project is to develop new inorganic cathode materials for multivalent battery concepts. As a starting point, we are investigating garnet structures as potential active materials for Mg batteries. |

We are glad about the funding of the BMBF FestBatt cluster project FB2-SAFE in cooperation with Prof. Zeier (University of Münster), Prof. Janek (JLU) as well as Prof. Gasteiger and Prof. Jossen (TU Munich). We will use thermoanalytical and calorimetric methods to investigate the safety of sulphide solid-state batteries. |

The focus of her work is the thermodynamic investigation of the ZrO2-HfO2-Y2O3-Ta2O5 material system. |
