WLAN eduroam
eduroam (education roaming) is a worldwide infrastructure for WLAN access. With the uniformly used SSID ‘eduroam’, a member of a participating organization can use a WLAN access at all other eduroam participants. The HRZ provides eduroam at JLU in many areas, and all students, employees, and guests of the University of Giessen can use it.
JLU students and employees must set their WLAN configuration according to the specifications below, guests according to the specifications of their home organization. In order to ensure that logins are only made to the logon server of the home organization, the WLAN configuration must be set accordingly by the user.
How to use the installation routines for Eduroam
In the instructions you will find the installation routines with the pre-configured settings for access to eduroam for members of JLU. More information about changing the settings for eduroam can also be found further down on this page.
General requirements
Members and associates of JLU need the following:
-
Access information - valid personal HRZ account or device account (user ID and password).
-
The WLAN adapter must support WPA3 encryption.
-
The end device must support authentication via 802.1x EAP.
-
The IP configuration of the WLAN adapter must be set to DHCP; i.e. "Obtain IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically" must be enabled.
For guests, the following requirements must be met:
-
The guest's university or organization participates in the eduroam network.
-
The device is configured according to the specifications of the guest's home university or organization.
-
Correct entry of the user ID and password that the guest has received from their university. The guest's university must be appended to the user ID with an @ sign: userID@university-of-the-guest.de (e.g. crts01@fh-giessen.de or abcd78@thm.de or abc4711@tu-darmstadt.de). The user ID and password can only be obtained from the computer center of the guest's home university or home organization.
If necessary, please check whether your home organization provides the CAT installation routine for setting up eduroam via the DFN websites. https://cat.eduroam.org
Why does the HRZ recommend the eduroam setup with the installation routines?
To enforce a stricter, roaming-compliant eduroam configuration in the future, eduroam WLAN setup should no longer be performed manually if possible, but only with the help of the DFN-Verein's user-friendly CAT installation routine or with the geteduroam app for Android. This allows the desired eduroam profiles for all supported operating systems to be installed quickly and securely over the network. This also ensures that the required certificates and also very importantly the external identity "eduroam" are implemented in the eduroam profile. As of June 30, 2019, only users whose outer identity is "eduroam" can log on to the eduroam WLAN with their device. The eduroam CAT (eduroam Configuration Assistant Tool) is a website operated by the GÉANT organization and DFN-Verein, among others, that provides automatic eduroam configuration assistants for Windows, macOS, Linux, Chrome OS, iOS. Geteduroam can be installed on Android devices via the Google Play Store.
