Professorship for life

In order to be appointed to a tenured professorship, postdocs must - contrary to the tenure-track professorship - have already attained full appointability. This goal is therefore open primarily to advanced postdocs, who have to compete against established professors in the appointment process.

To become a professor, you must meet the following hiring requirements according to Section 62 of the Hessian Higher Education Act (HHG):

  • Completed university studies, as a rule a doctorate.
  • Qualification for scientific or artistic work, usually proven by the quality of the doctoral degree
  • Additional scientific achievements
  • Pedagogical aptitude

In addition to these statutory minimum requirements, professorship advertisements contain further individual requirements that vary according to the department, the content of the position and its value. You can take a look at current advertisements at an early stage to find out what the requirements are. The duties formulated in the Hessian Higher Education Act under § 61 Professors can also serve as further orientation.
