Overview
As an interdisciplinary subject, nutrition science deals with various questions concerning human nutrition. What do individual foods consist of and what biochemical effect do they have in our bodies? What influence does nutrition have on diseases? How can changed eating habits prevent diseases? How can the quality of food be assessed? How do food ingredients act on a cellular and molecular level?
Our students acquire nutritional expertise during the Master's programme in Nutritional Sciences with the option of an individual focus in the areas of preventive and therapeutic nutrition or food science. They deal in depth with physiological and biochemical processes of human nutrition, with their disorders, the composition and analysis of foods and the functional mode of action of food ingredients.
The Master's programme in Nutritional Sciences is a consecutive programme that builds on an already acquired, relevant Bachelor's degree. Further information on admission requirements can be found in the category "Application".

The course of studies will be revised for the winter semester 2022/23 and will probably be adjusted as follows
Composition of the Study Programme
The degree programme is composed of 20 modules:
- 8 core (compulsory) modules with a scope of 6 credit points each.
- 8 profile (elective) modules, each with a total of 6 credit points
- a written Master's thesis with a total of 24 credit points.
Half of the course modules are compulsory (core modules), the other half of the course modules can be chosen from the entire range of courses offered by the department (profile modules).
The recognition of modules from other departments or universities is possible.
Individual specialisation is achieved by choosing the profile modules . The degree programme is successfully completed when all modules have been passed.

By choosing certain specialisation modules, the following specialisations shown in the Master's degree certificate can be acquired:

Internship (Optional)
Module MP 196 "Professional Internship" can be chosen as a profile module in all Master's degree programmes of Department 09 (corresponds to 12 CPs). This gives students the opportunity to gain practical experience and establish contacts in potential professional fields.
Thesis
In the Master's thesis, students demonstrate that they can work independently on a concrete, delimited topic within a limited period of time.

Entrance Requirements
The entry prerequisite for a Master’s degree course is a Bachelor’s degree with a relevant subject profile.
A relevant Bachelor degree course of a German university is:- Nutritional Sciences
Applicants with a Bachelor's degree in Home Economics/Ecotrophology must have passed the following (or equivalent) modules:
- Anatomy and Physiology
- Pathobiochemistry or Clinical Nutrition/-therapy
- Nutritional Physiology
- Human Nutrition
- Vegetable Food
- Food of Animal Origin
In the context of the application and admission process the Examination Board may recognise other final degrees as equivalent on a case-to-case basis.
