The Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Nutritional Sciences and Environmental Management invites applications for a

W2 Professorship (with W3 tenure track)
in Land Use and Climate Resilience

provisionally limited to a period of six years as of April 1st, 2026. Reference is made to § 70 Para. 1 and 4 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) and to the conditions of employment based on § 68 HessHG. In case of eligibility, which will be evaluated according to § 70 Para. 2 HessHG, a permanent W3 professorship will be offered subsequently. Proficient knowledge of German is expected.

Duties:

You will be responsible for teaching in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Nutritional Sciences and Environmental Management. Teaching at other faculties of the Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU), such as the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, Physics, Geography or the Faculty of Biology and Chemistry, is encouraged. Participation in the further development of study programs, also in English, is desired.

A willingness to participate in interdisciplinary research projects is expected, as wells as a commitment to the further internationalization of the faculty.

The research focus of the professorship is on land use and climate resilience. In addition to scientific questions on the functioning of the climate system (radiation and energy balance), this also includes aspects of climate mitigation and adaptation as well as research into the resilience of social-ecological systems. Methodologically, you are expected to deal with model application, model development and scenario analysis. Both regional and global scales can be considered. Apart from dynamic process models, AI-based methods can also be used. Working on topics relating to attribution science or analyzing compound events is also desirable.

Your research is expected to be integrated into existing research networks at JLU, such as the area of potential ‘Bioresources’ (Focus: Insects) and/or the accent areas ‘Biodiversity and global change’, ‘Nutrition of humans and animals’ or ‘Innovative crop production’. With your research, you will also actively contribute to the profile area ‘Climate and Climate Change Impacts’ of the Research Campus of Central Hessen and cooperate in this context in particular with working groups of the Faculty of Geography at the Philipps University of Marburg. In addition, further acquisition of external funding – preferably from the DFG, the BMBF and/or the EU – is expected.

Furthermore, a willingness to participate in the development of the Center for Sustainable Food Systems (ZNE), participation in the Giessen Graduate Centre for the Life Sciences (GGL) and/or participation in the Center for International Development and Environmental Research (ZEU) at JLU is expected.

Consideration of gender aspects in research and teaching is desired.

Requirements:

We are looking for a person who is actively involved in the modelling of land use systems and climate models. Due to the importance of climate change for agriculture, experience should be available in this context. Knowledge of the climate resilience of Central European landscapes is an advantage.

Pedagogic aptitude and the ability to teach in English are required.

A university degree, an outstanding, thematically relevant doctorate and additional academic achievements (proven e.g., by a habilitation or relevant peer-reviewed publications) in the field of climate and land use research are also required.

You should also demonstrate success in the independent acquisition of external funding.

In case the candidate exceeds the basic age limit of 50 years, a civil servant appointment under § 66 Para. 3 sentences 2 and 3 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) in conjunction with § 11 Hessian Career Regulation (HLVO) requires a specific functional interest.

The JLU aims to employ more women in academic research. We therefore particularly encourage female candidates to apply. JLU also pursues the goal at faculty leadership level of increased competence in dealing with gender and family-related issues. JLU is regarded as a family-friendly university. Applicants with children are very welcome. Applications from disabled people of equal aptitude will be given preference.

We strongly recommend candidates to refer to our fact sheet on application procedures.

Please send your application with the required documents via online form to the President of Justus Liebig University Giessen by October 24th, 2024, quoting the reference number 9-10/24.
