*** Keynote Speech held in english language, Lecture Performance in german***

Part of the event Series  "DIE EX-TRAHERE MATRIX: Bildung, Klima und Liebe aus (post-) kolonialer Perspektive"

July 10th at 8:30 PM: Keynote lecture (in English) and discussion with Adenike Titilope Oladosu – Ecofeminist, Climate Justice Activist, Eco-Reporter, and Initiator of the Fridays for Future movement in Nigeria. – Free admission

The production “THE EX-TRAHERE MATRIX – From Colonialism to Climate (In)justice” tells a fictional story: During a lecture by a German professor on the historical relations between Togo and Germany, an African activist, who interprets the past events differently, repeatedly interrupts the presentation. As a result, it is decided to use a night plane (a quantum machine in African tradition) to travel into the past without leaving the present, in order to uncover the whole truth about colonization…

Using archival images, interviews, and videos shot in Togo, the performance tell a story that connects the past and the present, opening our eyes to the future. The troupe wanted to bring this story to German stages to achieve the project’s goal: to make the past come alive, enabling better reflection on the present and the future. With the project “THE EX-TRAHERE MATRIX,” they bridge the gap from colonialism to climate (in)justice. Collaborating with artists and activists from Togo, exploring the traces of colonialism and climate change on-site. The aim is to let the local people speak for themselves, ensuring they are not relegated to supporting roles in the drama of climate justice, which directly affects them.

Togo is both heavily impacted by climate change and has an insufficiently addressed German colonial history. The project facilitates a creative, critical exchange and dialogue – simultaneously looking back and forward in time. Our goal is to bring the topic of colonialism and the climate crisis into the media spotlight in both Togo and Germany.

“THE EX-TRAHERE MATRIX” is a hybrid of theater, symposium, and documentary film – a performance lecture.

How are colonialism and the climate crisis connected? And why is this topic crucial for people in former German colonies as well as for those in Germany?
