The position is to be filled on a fixed-term basis in accordance with § 2 WissZeitVG and § 72 HessHG with the opportunity for own academic qualification at the Chair of Business Administration in the Food Economy and Agribusiness (Prof. Dr. Christian Herzig), Institute for Business Administration of the Agricultural and Food Sector at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Nutritional Sciences, and Environmental Management. The salary is in accordance with the collective labour agreement of the State of Hessen (E 13 TV-H).

As long as the maximum permissible duration of a fixed-term contract is not exceeded, you will be employed for a period of 3 years.

The project “Climate protection through animal husbandry” (KlimaTier)

The project aims to identify particularly climate-friendly and productive agricultural systems and to identify economic and social success factors and obstacles to their successful implementation. The project focuses on mixed farms with dairy cattle, as these are among the most important production systems in organic farming. Together with the farms, strategies for animal husbandry with added value for climate protection are developed and the results are presented for farm development, consultancy, policy and the public. The joint project consists of five project partners. Under the leadership of the three organic associations Demeter, Bioland and Naturland, regional practice-research networks in the states of Bavaria and Hesse are being established and supervised. The Technical University of Munich (Chair of Organic Agriculture and Agronomy, Prof. Dr. Hülsbergen) is responsible for farm analyses and climate assessment. For the socio-economic analysis in the project, JLU Giessen (Prof. Dr. Herzig) is looking for a new staff member with the following focus:

Comparative and multi-criterial evaluation of the examined production systems and measures in the project, in particular monetisation of climate protection services and analysis of ecosystem and sustainability performance/public welfare services.

Your tasks at a glance

  • Multi-criteria assessment of climate protection performance taking into account other ecosystem and public welfare services
  • Monetisation of climate protection services and related ecosystem services as a basis for an economic evaluation of the overall operational performance
  • Comparative economic evaluation of different business types
  • Close cooperation with the practical (organic associations and organic farms) and research (Technical University of Munich) partners of the project
  • Project management on the part of JLU Giessen, public relations and other measures of knowledge transfer (e.g. joint development of policy papers and workshops)
  • Planning and implementation of standardised data collection and analysis
  • Participation in project-related events (especially workshops) and external events (scientific/practice conferences etc.)
  • Collaboration in the preparation of handouts and information material (for consultants, the public and social and political actors) as well as project publications

The provision of academic services (including the processing of a research project financed by third party funds on a temporary basis) also serves the purpose of academic qualification.

Your qualifications and competences

  • Completed Master‘s or equivalent university degree in agricultural sciences, environmental and sustainability sciences, food/agricultural/resource economics, nutritional sciences, economics and social sciences or similar courses of study or specialisation (with good to very good success)
  • If existent, a doctorate / PhD in a relevant subject
  • At best, first experience in data collection and analysis using quantitative research methods
  • At best, first experience with monetisation/rewarding methods for climate change/public welfare/ecosystem services
  • Communication and team skills
  • Commitment, creativity and self-initiative
  • A basic knowledge of German and the willingness to further improve the language skills during the period of the project is expected
