Master of Arts

Initial Information:


For the multi-subject Master’s course History and Culture (MA) (Geschichts- und Kulturwissenschaften), Art History can be studied as a:

recommended study course plan, MA (Art History as major)

  • Major (50 CP + thesis)
  • Minor (40 CP)

The degree programme as a major is divided into five modules:

  • Pictures, Structures and Their Contexts (10 CP)
  • Picture Theory (10 CP)
  • New Research: Readings and Discussions (10 CP)
  • Museology, Exhibiting and Collecting (10 CP)
  • Reception in the Ancient World (10 CP)

As a minor, you will study all modules listed above with the exception of “Reception in the Ancient World”. The MA in Art History as a major is concluded with the Dissertation Module History of Art (30 CP).

Programme Content:


Art History at JLU Giessen is a long-standing academic discipline. Art History as a subject is embedded in the MA History and Culture and offers a degree programme which covers the history of art as well as issues in visual theories, cultural and media studies. Thus, students acquire a strongly research-oriented qualification in Art History.

 

Entrance Requirements:


Prerequisites for acceptance into the Master’s course with Art History as a major are:

  • proof of competences in art history in a narrower sense from a BA degree (completed at a university with the right to award doctorate degrees) with at least 56 CP OR
  • Completion of the BA History and Culture at JLU with Art History as a first (80 CP) or second (70 CP) major subject. If you studied Art History is a first minor subject (40 CP) only, you will have to make up the Contextualisation Module (8 CP) and a second Epoch Module (8 CP) from the BA degree during your first two semesters of the MA.

Prerequisites for acceptance into the Master’s course with Art History as a minor are:

  • proof of competences in art history in a narrower sense from a BA degree (completed at a university with the right to award doctorate degrees) with at least 40 CP OR
  • Completion of the BA History and Culture at JLU with Art History as a first minor subject (40 CP).

Perspectives:


A Master’s degree in Art History enables access to a variety of professional fields in museums and the exhibition sector, heritage preservation, art-dealing, tourism and journalism. For a research-oriented or scientific occupation (e.g., at university but also at many museums) a doctoral degree (doctoral thesis and its defence) is required which in turn requires successful completion of the Master’s degree.
