This workshop is aimed at GCSC/GGK doctoral researchers in all disciplines. The aim is to complement one of the objectives of the Aufbaukurs, namely to present an initial chapter, usually the introduction, which includes a literature review/Forschungsstand. Those who have already taken the Aufbaukurs, as well as those in the first year yet to take it, are invited to attend.

The course will give insight into a general practice for writing a critical literature review for a dissertation. We will consider overall questions of how to structure a literature review and explore ways of constructing convincing critiques and drawing broader assessments of the current state of research.

Participants are asked to submit one week before the course: 1) a two- to five-page sample of their existing literature review. This could come from a chapter that has been or is being written for the dissertation or, for those at an earlier stage of their research, it could come from the exposé; 2) a two- to five-page sample of a literature review that has been published in a work that you have found useful for your own research (this could be from a book or it could come from a review essay/Sammelrezension). Text contributions may be submitted in German or English.

In addition to the one-day workshop, all participants will have the opportunity the following day to discuss their individual texts with Katharina Stornig in one-to-one meetings.

Additional voluntary, individual counseling on the following Friday, (09.00-12.00)
