Student academic writing is part and parcel of higher education. For students, it is vital to learn the writing conventions of their disciplines as academic writing is not only a form of communicating research but also a most relevant tool for assessing students’ academic performance. Teachers in higher education, therefore, often ask themselves what role they might want or have to play in supporting their students’ learning of discipline-specific writing conventions and how to do so.
This workshop will cover some of the basics concerning teaching academic Writing in the Disciplines (WID). The three most important didactic aspect that will guide our workshop are: our own position towards WID as teachers, researchers, and writers, WID concepts and assignments, and WID methods. The goal of this workshop is for you to assess where to start with possibly integrating the teaching of academic writing into your discipline-specific courses. However, it is not necessary for participants to have previous teaching experience in higher education.
