In this workshop, we will discuss various aspects of a theory of unpopular culture in the making. The concept may complicate and challenge the binary of high and popular culture by describing the contested territory both lay claim to in their own respective ways. It draws our attention to normative mechanisms of aesthetic judgment, commercial success, group formation, and the politics of cultural standards. Using an introductory text as the basis for our discussion, we can explore the implications of unpopular culture in reference to the participants' individual research projects.
