At a time in which European monarchies are confronted with various political, institutional and cultural changes, they also have to face the challenge to navigate between past, present and future in order to ensure their continuity. Not only monarchies have to modernise and adapt to new cultural, medial and political environments, research on these institutions has to modernise as well. Monarchies no longer are only an object of research for historians, but offer many starting points for exploring aspects that are of crucial interest to scholarly fields as varied as cultural, media and literary studies as well as history, political and economic science. This two-day conference brings together scholars from various disciplinary backgrounds to discuss, explain, evaluate and make sense of the cultural phenomena that contemporary monarchies confront us with. Presentations and keynote lectures will discuss innovative historical perspectives, raise and answer questions about monarchies’ representations in politics, economy and popular culture and will discuss the present role of sovereigns.

The conference is organised with the support of the International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture (GCSC). To register for the conference please visit the conference website: https://realmsofroyalty.wordpress.com
