Research assistant (m/f/d)

The position is part of the externally funded DFG Research Unit 5664 "Agroforestry for sustainable multifunctional agriculture (FORMULA)" and is to be filled on a fixed-term basis in accordance with § 2 WissZeitVG and § 72 HessHG with the opportunity for own academic qualification at the Chair of Organic agriculture with the Focus on sustainable soil use, Department of Agronomy and Plant Breeding II at the Faculty Agricultural Sciences, Nutritional Sciences and Environmental Management. The salary is in accordance with the collective labour agreement of the State of Hessen (E 13 TV-H).

As long as the maximum permissible duration of a fixed-term contract is not exceeded, you will be employed for a period of 4 years.

FORMULA, which consists of five sub-projects, is part of a cooperation between Justus Liebig University Giessen and the Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) in Müncheberg. It is working on the topics of soil carbon storage and trace gas emissions, water and nutrient fluxes, species diversity and functional biodiversity, agronomy, resource efficiency and crop stress. The research focusses on the interactions along gradients between trees and crops.

Your tasks at a glance

  • Contribute at several soil sampling campaigns at the two field trials in cooperation with the partners from ZALF
  • Independent execution of soil sampling and analysis with a focus on carbon and carbon stability
  • Determination of soil carbon sequestration and storage and of the net ecosystem carbon balance (NECB) in agroforestry systems as well as statistical analysis of the results
  • Contribution at greenhouse gas measurement campaigns
  • Publication of results in international and peer-reviewed journals

The provision of academic services (including the processing of a research project financed by third party funds on a temporary basis) also serves the purpose of academic qualification (for example to do a doctorate).

Your qualifications and competences

  • Completed Master‘s or equivalent university degree in environmental sciences, agricultural sciences, ecology, geo sciences or similar and a doctorate/PhD.
  • Knowledge in soil science and plant-soil-interactions
  • Good insights into practical agriculture including in-depth knowledge of soil, animal, plant and environmental sciences
  • Ability to work in a team and communication skills
  • The willingness to undertake extended fieldwork
  • Very good oral and written presentation skills in German and English
  • Drivers licence class B, ideally BE
