Chair of Soil Resources
The soils as the uppermost weathering zone of the Earth´s crust is the site for plants and plant production, forms the habitat for soil organisms, and fulfils many other crucial functions in ecosystems.
Central aspects of teaching and research of the Chair of Soil Resources are
i) the role of soils as regulators of the cycling of carbon and nutrients at the interface of hydrosphere, biosphere, atmosphere, and geosphere, as well as
ii) the fate and effects of pollutants in soils and ecosystems (environmental chemistry and ecotoxicology).
Central questions are how soil and site characteristics, soil development, land use, and the management of soils affect the cycling and fate of carbon, nutrients, and pollutants in ecosystems as well as which effects pollutants have in ecosystems. Using the synergistic effects of the iFZ Research Centre for Biosystems, Land Use and Nutrition and our cooperation with the Neu-Ulrichstein Research Center, we are committed to the sustainable use and the conservation of soil and ecosystems – worldwide.
