For problem- and future-oriented research and teaching, the trusting cooperation in various inter- and transdisciplinary structures is of great importance.

The efforts of the faculty staff in the cultural and humanities centres at the JLU play an important role in these collaborative efforts. Extensive networking at the research and teaching level exists with the International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture (GCSC) , the Giessen Graduate Centre Cultural Sciences (GGK) , the Giessen Centre Eastern Europe (GiZo) , and the Centre for Media and Interactivity (ZMI) . The close cooperation of various faculty members with the Centre for Teacher Training (ZfL) also demonstrates the efforts of the faculty to ensure a high quality of teacher training in Hesse.

Moreover, the members of the faculty engage in cooperative courses for high-quality teaching, which also addresses interdisciplinary research contexts and interests. Thus, interdisciplinary fields of research are examined from different perspectives in jointly conceived and conducted seminars, and the interest of students in further research questions is awakened.

Interreligious problem fields and tasks are on the agenda in dialogue-oriented cooperative events, organised by the theological institutes, and interdepartmentally, the reference to interdisciplinary fields of research is anchored sustainably in joint courses and modules.

The department also undertakes numerous efforts in regional cooperation. Together with the Philipps University Marburg, the C ollaborative Research Centre / Transregio 138: “Dynamics of Security. Types of Securitization from a Historical Perspective” has been launched. In appointment procedures of the historical sciences, we coordinate closely with the historians from Marburg .

Another reliable partner in the region is the Marburg Herder Institute for Historical East Central Europe Research of the Leipniz Association.

We also cooperate with the Goethe University Frankfurt on a regional level: There has been close cooperation in research and teaching in Protestant Theology for many years. The chair for Islamic Theology and Didactics is a member of the Centre for Islamic Studies (Zefis) in Frankfurt

Furthermore, the institutes and chairs at the faculty cooperate with many other partner universities and institutions on a national and international level. Information on these multifaceted networks can be found on the respective institute and chair pages.

Researchers at Faculty 04 have access to numerous funding opportunities.

• Research funding at F aculty 04

Faculty 04 offers the possibility to support individual and collaborative research projects of habilitated members of the faculty by means of the Förderfonds Forschung des Fachbereichs Geschichts - und Kulturwissenschaften in the form of small start-up grants of max. 3,000 euros. The aim is to support projects until they are ready for an application for national and international funding. Informal applications can be submitted each year in the summer semester with start of funding on the 1st of October.

Furthermore, the faculty supports young researchers by offering post doc positions funded for one year. The aim of the one-year full-time employment is to enable the excellent post doc talents to build up a suitable third-party funding base at the beginning of their post doc phase. For this purpose, a project is prepared for application and submitted for national or international funding in the course of the year.

The faculty currently offers young researchers who are employed with a research focus or who are unable to gain experience in teaching as part of their employment, support in the form of paid teaching assignments. Each semester, two teaching assignments are announced as part of the programme funded by the idea competition of the Office for Equal Opportunities. Interested employees may submit an informal application.

• Funding within the JLU

Within the JLU, larger joint projects can be funded by start-up funding from the Research Fund of the Justus Liebig University Giessen . Applications for funding from this fund can be submitted any time.

The start-up funding for joint research initiatives of scientists at Justus-Liebig-Universität Giessen and Philipps-Universität Marburg comes from Flexi-Funds (Research campus Middle Hesse) .

Apart from project funding by the Federal Government (for example, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research [ BMBF] ) and the state [e.g. within the framework of LOEWE or other programmes of the Hesse Ministry of Science and Culture [ HMWK ]), the programmes of the German Research Foundation [ DFG ] are primarily used to support research projects. The German Academic Exchange Service [ DAAD ] also funds bilateral projects for scientific cooperation. There is also a large number of foundations that fund research projects. At Faculty 04, up to eleven students are awarded a doctorate each year. Moreover, there are on average two habilitations per year (these figures are based on the average of the years 2012-2015).

• Yo ung researchers ’ development measures at F aculty 04

The young researchers are supported by the trusting supervisory relationship with the professors of the faculty.

The close supervisory relationship is the basis for a scientific career in History and Culture Sciences. The faculty is making a number of efforts to productively accompany and initiate this path:

Already during your studies, you have opportunities to immerse yourself independently in various fields in student working groups (e.g. STARK and IGNIS ). Through the close exchange of these working groups with the professors, scientific discourse is made possible and promoted. So-called summer schools have been established in many subjects in recent years (for example at the Historical Institute, the working group “ Antiquity and the Middle Ages ” and in Protestant Theology).

In those summer schools, students in higher semesters are offered a conference programme, which offers opportunities to deepen knowledge as well as scientific networking. The same goal is pursued in advanced seminars of the faculty in which the exchange between potential doctoral students and doctoral candidates is often encouraged. Colloquia offer the opportunity to talk to other doctoral candidates during the dissertation phase and to reflect on their own work status. On the level of the academic junior faculty, a young network has recently emerged that promotes interdisciplinary discourse in the doctoral or habilitation phase. Doctoral candidates in the department can also often participate in the dissertation funding programme of the GCSC and the GGK .

• The Path to the Doctorate / H abilitation

Formally, the path to the doctorate is specified in the respective applicable doctoral or habilitation regulations . Many young researchers have a state-funded teaching or project assignment during their qualification phase and acquire scientific competences in the fields of research and teaching beyond their doctorate and habilitation. Many institutions also provide funding that supports a scientific career path.

The researchers and teachers of the faculty are involved in a variety of ways of transferring scientific knowledge to the regional and national public.

The Giessen Antiques Collection is open to the public almost daily, offering attractive special exhibitions and events many times a year.

The Collegium Gissenum is an annual series of courses organised by the Institute of Philosophy in collaboration with the President of the JLU. Every summer semester, there is a series of lectures on various philosophical issues that address students of all faculties as well as all interested Giessen citizens in a language that is commonly understood.

The dies academicus of the theologies offers a lecture every summer semester in which theological topics and questions are presented to a broad audience.

Beyond that, many institutes of the faculty participate in the JLU continued training programme for teachers and thus promote a dialogue that has already been fruitful for many decades.

• Libraries

Members of Faculty 04 have access to widely available and high-quality literature for their research and teaching at the libraries of the JLU. The library stock is spread across the university library and the branch library at Philosophikum II , as well as in the specialist libraries of History and Culture Sciences ( Histor ical Institute ; Classical Philology; Classical Archaeology; M edia L ibrary of Protestant and Catholic Theology ).

• Digital collections

Through the Prometheus Image Archive , it is possible to access an extensive digital image archive for research and teaching purposes at any time. Annette Mag and Dr Stefan Brenne are the contact persons at the faculty responsible for the database maintenance. Beyond that, various digitally supported teaching projects have been developed in Classical Studies in recent years that allow new ways of access to specific areas of knowledge. ( The Greek Symposion ; VivaVox ). For researchers and teachers in the field of East-Central European research, the digital content of the Herder Institute in Marburg is of great interest. In the future, the soon-to-be-established chair for Digital and Visual History will, among other things, process and harness the content.

• Antiques Collection

The Antiques Collection at the JLU is largely the responsibility of the chair of Classical Archaeology. With more than 4,000 objects, the collection of coins is one of the main focus points of the Giessen Antiques Collection, as well as a great number of antique vases, Greek and Roman terracottas, Roman glass vessel, and Etruscan body part votives.
